Sardinia, second largest of the Mediterranean islands, is best known for its beautiful coastline, the spectacular natural scenery of its interior, its numerous archaeological treasures and its friendly inhabitants. Additional attractions for cyclists are the well maintained and lightly trafficked roads, the fabulous food and the spectacular beaches. The island has a typical Mediterranean climate, with approximately 300 days of sunshine during the year, so the season lasts from March until November.
The south and west of the island have fascinating Punic ruins, and the wild and undiscovered western coastline. In the Barbagia region and the eastern coast which are dominated by the Gennargentu National Park, the maquis vegetation thrives in the isolated valleys and on inaccessible hilltops. Northern Sardinia is dotted with Romanesque churches in the Logudoro and Gallura countryside, and also boasts the Costa Esmerelda.
