This itinerary links the Fife region to the north of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth with the Borders to the south to give a wonderful two week bicycle tour.
Although it is possible to ride all the way from Edinburgh to St Andrews on the first day, it is suggested that you take a train out of the city and across the Firth of Forth Rail Bridge. There are a series of small stations between Inverkeithing on the northern end of the bridge and Leucars, about 5 miles from St Andrews. There is no problem putting bikes onto the trains. You stay in St Andrews for two nights and on the second day you will ride a loop to the south to visit the fishing villages of the East Neuk. From St Andrews the next leg takes you north to the Firth of Tay, and then along the coast to Newburgh before turning inland to the village of Kinross on the shores of Loch Leven for another two night layover. The loop ride from here takes you to Falkland for a visit to Falkland Palace.
From Kinross you ride south to Dunfermline and then cross the Forth Bridge to South Queensferry. From here it is a short ride into the centre of Edinburgh.
From Edinburgh you ride east to Musselburgh and then follow the coast to the picturesque resort of North Berwick en route to historic Dunbar. The second leg leads you inland into the wild sheep-dotted Lammemuir Hills, visiting Abbey St Bathans and Duns on the way to Kelso for a two night stopover. The loop ride from Kelso offers marvellous Borders scenery and the chance to visit Floors Castle. Next stop is Selkirk – en route you will see Dryburgh Abbey, Scott’s View and Thirlstane Castle and perhaps lunch in quaint Melrose. From Selkirk you follow the Tweed valley to Innerleithen – one of the best known mountain biking centres in Britain. Heading north from Innerleithen you enjoy spectacular moorland and some wonderful views over Edinburgh on the approach to the city.
